Rice Challenge 2017 – An Alternative Harvest

The fairandfunky rice challenge is BACK! Each year we take on the 90kg rice challenge from our partners Just Trading Scotland – to sell at least 90kg of kilombero rice from Malawi. Why 90kg? Because when a farmer sells 90kg of rice they earn enough to send their children to school for a year.

As in previous years we will be partnering The Welcome Centre in Huddersfield in the challenge, so you can buy rice and donate to disadvantaged communities in Huddersfield in our ‘Alternative Harvest’

This year we’ve made it even easier to buy rice and take part in the challenge and help us reach our target to sell 90kg of rice five times over! (That’s 450kg!!) Simply head over to our fairandfunky shop to buy a bag of rice – use code 90RICE on checkout and this will be donated to the Welcome Centre and Food Bank in Huddersfield on your behalf. A bag of rice costs £3.20 – you can buy as many as you like. And with code 90RICE you won’t be charged for postage!

We’re also looking for schools, churches and businesses to take part in the challenge – encouraging as many as possible to buy a bag of rice. Schools can click here for more information in our Alternative Harvest blog. And please email helen@fairandfunky.com for more information or if you would like to lead a challenge where you are!

And please help spread the word from the comfort of your sofa! Every day this week we will share the stories of the rice farmers in Malawi who benefit from the sales of the rice. Please click here to read, share, tweet, and facebook the ‘Rice Challenge; Meet the Farmers’ blog series!
