Never too young, or too old, to Change The World!

We were delighted to be asked to run Fairtrade workshops for every year group at Smithies Moor Cooperative Academy during Fairtrade Fortnight! It gave us an opportunity to showcase our Fairtrade SCRAPtastic workshops all in one place and demonstrate that children of all ages can access workshops on Fairtrade and sustainability. They all know what it feels like when something is “NOT FAIR!”

Through insightful questioning each class were able to tell us the supply chain of favourite Fairtrade products – chocolate, coffee and tea. Students carried the bag of cocoa, coffee and tea to shipping companies and discussed how products are processed in factories across Europe. We looked at the roles and responsibilities of every one along the supply chain and how people need to be paid for the work they do. We discussed how this isn’t easy in global supply chains and the importance of Fairtrade.

“Engaging, interesting and fun. The workshops had lots of in depth explanations of Fairtrade and lots of opportunity for children to participate.” Teacher feedback

Fairtrade works with farmers and workers so they can improve their living standards, invest in their communities and businesses, and protect our shared environment. Farmers are guaranteed a fair price and companies along the Fairtrade supply chain uphold fair production standards and practices. Fair prices provide an immediate lifeline for farmers and workers struggling with low incomes and disadvantaged by global trade. When we buy products with the Fairtrade mark WE are investing in producer communities too. We are taking a little step to change the world.

The learning about Fairtrade doesn’t stay in the classroom! The message of Fairtrade needs to be carried out into the wider school community – for conversations to be had at the breakfast table: Where does our food come from? Who grew our favourite foods? We are all connected, people and planet. With this in mind each child at Smithies Moor Cooperative Academy took a Fairtrade SCRAPtastic creation home with them, to share their learning and understanding about Fairtrade and explain what the Fairtrade mark means. Together we made 31 love Fairtrade mobiles, 60 Fairtrade flags, 28 Fairtrade superhero masks, 30 Fairtrade Tea mobiles, 30 coffee Fairtrade marks and 49 Fairtrade wallets!!

“So informative providing good knowledge for our children. Really thought provoking; enabled children to think about their contribution to making the world a better place. Delivered by fantastic teachers who made it creative and fun for the children.” Teacher feedback.
