This workshop is adaptable for either KS1 or KS2 and introduces participants to Fairtrade through games, debates, workshops and presentations, with particular regard to Chocolate. Participants develop their speaking and listening skills; to talk about their opinions and explain their views. Participants also develop the sense of social justice and moral responsibility; recognising the role of voluntary, community and pressure groups.

Learning objectives

  • To develop an understanding of Fairtrade and why it is important
  • To learn about the journey of chocolate from bean to bar
  • To find out about life as a cocoa farmer in Ghana
  • To develop a sense of social justice and moral responsibility
  • To develop speaking and listening skills
  • To develop an understanding of a sense of place in the world


The workshop uses games, role play, debate, workshops and video to teach the learning objectives; and work towards reaching the following National Curriculum guidelines:

  • Citizenship: Preparing to play an active role as citizen
  • Geography: Knowledge and understanding of places; Understanding of a locality in a country which is less economically developed
  • English – Speaking and Listening En1: Group discussion and interaction
  • Numeracy – Problem solving


This ‘off the shelf’ 90 minute workshop costs £150 and assumes a class size of 30 children. This includes two members of staff and all material costs.
