Congratulations Fairtrade Yorkshire!

On January 18th we were part of a day of celebrations as Yorkshire was declared the very first Fairtrade region in the UK.

fairandfunky led “Sustainability and Fairtrade” workshops in Leeds Civic Hall, which caught the eye of all who attended: MP’s, schools and the Fairtrade Foundation. Using recycled Fairtrade packaging we worked with attendees to produce individual scrapbooks for people to record their steps for Fairtrade in 2013.

It was wonderful to be part of such an historic day and listening to the various speeches left us both proud of our achievements and inspired to take further steps for Fairtrade.

fairandfunky believe, and regularly tell our workshop attendees, that it is little steps that change the world. And this was apparent throughout the day. Fairtrade Yorkshire was able to achieve this historic recognition by working together: with schools,

faith communities, support groups, businesses, shops and individuals all taking their own steps to ensure that the commitment to Fairtrade spread the length and breadth of Yorkshire. It could not have happened without each and every one of those people.

Fairtrade Yorkshire demonstrates the power of a movement of people united around a vision for a better world, coming together to do something about it.

On the day itself, Yorkshire was congratulated by those leading the speeches:

“I am here to congratulate the people of Yorkshire, I am very inspired by your acheivements. Here’s to the next successes!” Adam Gardner, Campaigns Team, Fairtrade Foundation.

“This is another coup for Yorkshire. Huge congratulations and thank yous to the passionate people of Yorkshire.” Greg Mulholland MP

“This is a very special moment, a great achievement. Yorkshire is playing it’s part to help other people in the world. This is a day of celebration.” Hilary Benn MP

We were proud to be part of this day, and look forward to continue being part of Fairtrade Yorkshire activities, and empowering other to take their own little steps to change the world.
